ANC Youth League calls for intergration of sign language
12 December 2013
The ANC Youth League is happy with the steady progress our government is making with regards to the rights to employment of the disabled community. When the ANC government took over the reins in 1994, one positive development was a disability employment target of 2.00% in the public service. Even the rules of the democratic South African parliament accommodates sign language interpreter(s), thus it is our considered view that the South African government will never intentionally dis-empower the deaf people of South Africa.
The ANC Youth League, therefore, calls on all our people to unite and support the deaf. We will engage our government to ensure unification of South African sign language and fast-tracking the pace of a universal sign language to diminish differences and problems of loosing messages in interpretation. We note the public outcry about the sign language interpretation of the various speeches that were delivered at the Memorial Service of Comrade President Mandela.
