The passing of President Nelson R. Mandela on 5th December 2013
6 December 2013
It is with great sadness that we tonight bid farewell to a giant of our nation, one of the greatest sons of our soil, and a founding father of our organization, the ANCYL; Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.
In his own words, the former President of the ANCYL (1950-1952), the ANC (1991-1997) and the first democratically elected President of South Africa (1994-1999) spoke of the seeds of motivation that germinated into his life of service:
`In my youth in the Transkei I listened to the elders of my tribe telling stories of the old days. Amongst the tales they related to me were those of wars fought by our ancestors in defense of the fatherland. The names of Dingane and Bambata, Hintsa and Makana, Squngthi and Dalasile, Moshoeshoe and Sekhukhuni, were praised as the glory of the entire African nation. I hoped then that life might offer me the opportunity to serve my people and make my own humble contribution to their freedom struggle.`
Indeed, the Volunteer in chief of the 1956 Defiance Campaign, and the first commander of the people`s army -Umkhonto we Sizwe in 1961, not only found this opportunity but lived up to it, and superseded it, giving us all inspiration to follow in his footsteps.
We, as the ANC Youth League, call on the youth of our country to join in paying homage to our great leader. More than that we call on our fellow young South Africans to live up to the revolutionary ethos of Madiba, who in his life realized the freedom he and his generation fought for.
We dip our revolutionary banner for the Freedom Fighter`s Commander in Chief, our global icon of humanity.
Young Lions, pick up the spear of this gallant hero our struggle freedom, to realize our generational mission of economic freedom in our lifetime.
Lala ngoxolo Tata. Long Live Madiba, Long Live!
