23rd National Congress: Update on proceedings

This morning Congress adopted the credentials and the programme of Congress. The credentials report adopted by Congress indicates that voting branch delegates at Congress stand at 3,643 representing 2,052 branches. The breakdown of voting delegates is as follows:
Eastern Cape - 623
Free State - 319
Gauteng - 381
Limpopo - 671
Mpumalanga - 330
North-West - 354
Northern Cape- 171
Western Cape - 187
Provincial Executive Committees - 146
National Executive Committee - 27
Congress further adopted the Political and Organisational Reports as presented to Congress.
The following constitutional amendments have been adopted by the delegates:
- The size of the National Executive Committee has been increased from 30 to 35 members;
- The NEC and all structures of the ANC Youth League will have a 50/50 gender representation;
The electoral rules have also been adopted by Congress and the electoral commission has opened the nomination process wherein delegates will be allowed to nominate from the floor. The report presented to Congress by the Electoral Commission showed only one nomination for the ANCYL President, Cde Julius Malema. Cde Saki Mofokeng was nominated from the floor and his name will therefore be added to the ballot paper. The NEC has therefore been dissolved and the new NEC will be announced once the electoral process has been concluded.
Following the nomination process, the Deputy President of the ANC, Cde Kgalema Motlanthe will be addressing Congress.
After the Deputy President`s address, the Treasurer-General`s report will be presented, immediately followed by commissions.
Various Commissions will deal with a variety of issues and proposals contained in Congress discussion documents.
