Statement on ANC Youth League in the Eastern Cape
9 March 2007
The African National Congress (ANC) has upheld the decision of the ANC Youth League National Executive Committee (NEC) taken in December last year to disband the ANCYL Eastern Cape Provincial Executive Committee.
From the outset, the PEC expressed its respect for the decision of the NEC.
However, it decided to appeal against this decision to the ANC at a national level. As a consequence, the ANC undertook a process of consultation and interaction with the Youth League NEC and Eastern Cape PEC.
This consultation focused on the state of organisation of the Youth League in the province. After consideration of all relevant information, the ANC agreed that the decision of the Youth League NEC should be upheld.
The process of revitalising the Youth League in the province will be guided by the desire to unite the organisation, and would therefore be all-inclusive. None of the members of the disbanded PEC will be excluded from this work.
A new Provincial Task Team (PTT) will be established in place of the disbanded PEC to oversee and coordinate the revitalisation of the Youth League structures in the province. The PTT will be convened by Mlibo Qoboshiyane and coordinated by Thabo Matiwane. It will be reinforced by three members of the Youth League NEC, and will include three representatives from each region.
There was general agreement - by both the NEC and the disbanded PEC - that the state of organisation in four of the province`s seven regions required urgent attention.
It was agreed that Regional Task Teams (RTTs) should be set up in the Cacadu, Ukhahlamba, Chris Hani and Amathole regions to ensure the recruitment of new members, the proper constitution of branches, and thorough preparation for regional conferences. In two other regions - OR Tambo and Nelson Mandela Metro - it was agreed that preparations for regional conferences should be expedited.
In their first meeting, the PTT will establish a working core team.
For its part, the ANC will provide whatever support necessary to the concerted effort of building and uniting the ANC Youth League in the Eastern Cape.
