ANC YL supports Wits University students and calls for speedy resolution of their demands
16 September 2009
The African National Congress Youth League supports Wits University students in their strike against the increase of tuition and residence fees and upfront payment. Wits University Management seems to be taking the University further away from poor students through unending increments, particularly of upfront payments.
The ANC YL calls on the Wits University Management to agree with all the demands of the students and appreciate the reality that more students from disadvantaged background should have access to and progress within Wits University. The extent of particularly black students' access to and progress within Wits University has not been satisfactory over the past years and such should change.
We further call for a complete halt to threats of expulsions and arrests posed by the University Vice Chancellor Loyiso Nongxa. The University Management should appreciate that students have a right to strike and raise their concerns. The University Management should engage with students in good faith, and we will be closely watching the entire process until students` concerns are adequately resolved.
