Statement on gunning down of Captain Senzo Meyiwa
27 October 2014
The ANC Youth League condemns the gunning down of Senzo Meyiwa, the Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana Captain in Vosloorus by not-yet-known gunmen. We pass our heartfelt condolences to his wife Mandisa, family, friends and to all the soccer loving people of our country. May His Soul Rest in Peace.
We propose that PSL and soccer authorities should consider postponing the derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in respect of the passing-on of this national hero and Captain of both Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates. It might have never been done, but it looks necessary to be done.
As the ANC Youth League, we call on all young people to be vigilant and work with law enforcement authorities in all municipal wards of our country. We are sick and tired of this new wave of violent killings and attempted murders that are carried-out in a disguise of robbery.
We will be issuing a correspondence to all our Regions and Branches asking them to give reports on work-being done by each Branch on Community Safety measures. We shall make sure that young people, become the first ones to see and report suspicious activities before any crime happens, because we, as young people; seat, eat and drink with this trigger-happy soulless thieves. Young people of South Africa are tired of these cowards who hide behind unlicensed fire-arms and kill our people.
We want each and every Community Policing Forum to be dominated by people who are aware of the dynamics of each ward and who have the necessary vigilance to help curb crime. In memory of the Soccer Captain, Senzo Meyiwa, we shall call the internal ANC Youth League community safety committees - Senzo Meyiwa Safety Sub-committees. These structures will be reporting to the Branch Executive Committees each week on the work-being done in each municipal ward to curb crime and prevent another deadly incident.
