Statement on Drug Awareness Week

26 June 2014

The ANC Youth League calls on all young people to observe the Drug Awareness Week (24 - 28 June 2014) by implementing programmes that are responsive to the crisis that we face as a nation. Abuse of alcohol and drugs like dagga, nyaope, cocaine, heroin and ecstasy should be fought in all Municipal Wards by all members of the ANC Youth League. We call on our Branches to partner with SANCA offices and community leaders in identifying addicts and helping those who want to quit while police are assisted in arresting the merchants.

Today, June 26 is the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking and as the ANC Youth League; we join the international community on its fight against illegal drug use led by United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). We stand against drugs and alcohol abuse because they finish chances of continuing with education thus ending a possibility of a young person to be employable.

As the ANC Youth League, we are to work tirelessly for a drug-free school environment. Our campaign to clean-up our schools is informed by a growing number of alcoholics who are teenagers and young adults. We are in an undesirable state when it comes to alcohol and drug intake by our society and as the ANC Youth League we want to curb this, at its root. Out of the current crop of young people, we want to have responsible adults that are sober and caring.

We reiterate our call for a greater investment in sporting, arts and recreational activities and facilities particularly in the drug hot-spot communities like Eldorado Park in SOWETO. We want Municipalities and Provincial Government Departments of Sports & Arts to set joint programmes to attract more young people to partake in the activities that promote healthy lifestyles. As the ANC Youth League, we want to put a stop in the breakage of families and the uncalled for strain alcohol and drug abuse costs our families.
