ANCYL Limpopo press statement on the withdrawal of charges against the students at the University Of Limpopo (Turfloop Campus)
17 August 2009
The ANCYL in Limpopo wishes to welcome the withdrawal of charges against 41 students from the University of Limpopo - Turfloop Campus at Mankweng Magistrate Court today. This marks the end of a very difficult period in the struggle for quality education in that institution.
We further wish to re-affirm the right of the students to embark on peaceful protest for better and quality education. We however, wish to condemn the acts of vandalism that characterised the recent strike and we are proud of the fact that all our 41 members who were arrested could not be linked to those acts of vandalism since this is not the culture of the Progressive Youth Alliance.
We are also disappointed by the incompetence and conduct of the police during this time who went around arresting students randomly without checking first as to whether these students are linked to the acts of vandalism or not.
We believe that the management will play its part in trying to address all the issues that were raised by the students in their memorandum. Most importantly, we hope that the academic programme of the institution will resume as early as this week.
